The Story

European manufacturing is under increasing pressure to become more flexible, sustainable, and resilient. Companies must support product customization, reduce downtime, improve predictive maintenance, and ensure circularity, while operating across fragmented supply chains and distributed resources. At the same time, limited interoperability, lack of trusted cross-company data exchange, and inefficient scheduling mechanisms prevent manufacturers from fully adopting the Manufacturing-as-a-Service (MaaS) paradigm.

UniMaaS addresses this gap by developing a unified platform that enables decentralized manufacturing resources and supply chains to operate “as a Service.” By integrating advanced modeling, AI-driven decision-making, and secure data-sharing mechanisms, the project helps European SMEs and industries improve efficiency, reliability, and sustainability across the entire manufacturing lifecycle.

Project Overview

Unified Modeling and Automated Scheduling for Manufacturing as a Service (UniMaaS) delivers an integrated digital platform designed to transform how manufacturing resources and supply chains are modeled, coordinated, and optimized. The platform enables flexible and decentralized manufacturing ecosystems, allowing companies to access customized manufacturing service chains while maintaining operational control and data sovereignty.

The architecture of UniMaaS is structured around three tightly integrated Suites.

The Data Modelling Suite establishes the foundation for trusted collaboration through manufacturing dataspaces, cloud-based resource monitoring, and secure cross-company data exchange. It also introduces Digital Product Passports to support traceability, lifecycle transparency, and sustainability reporting across value chains.

Building on this foundation, the Modelling Suite provides modular modeling of manufacturing resources and processes. It enables intent-based servitization, AI-based estimations, & advanced analysis capabilities, allowing organizations to simulate, evaluate, and configure service-oriented manufacturing scenarios with greater precision & flexibility.

The Decision-Making Suite focuses on intelligent scheduling and planning of distributed manufacturing resources. By integrating AI-driven optimization mechanisms, it supports performance optimization, circularity strategies, and sustainability-aware decision-making under uncertain demand and resource variability.

The platform leverages cloud computing, digital twins, and trustworthy AI technologies as core enablers. UniMaaS will be validated across four industrial pilots in aircraft maintenance, automotive seating, 3D construction printing, and logistics and warehouse management, demonstrating its adaptability across diverse manufacturing domains.

Our Contribution

FDI leads the project’s Communication, Exploitation, and Standardization activities, operating them as an integrated “go-to-market” workflow to ensure long-term sustainability and impact.

FDI maintains a structured results inventory, coordinates stakeholder engagement, and develops both the overall platform-level business plan and dedicated exploitation tracks per result and partner, including value propositions, IP and licensing routes, and post-project sustainability planning.
FDI contributes technically to the Data Modelling Suite by shaping how manufacturing product and process data are modeled, governed, and exposed to support lifecycle services and data-driven decision-making.
Within the Digital Product Passport stream, FDI aligns UniMaaS with emerging EU requirements under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation, supporting structured provenance, sustainability attributes, controlled access for different actors, and auditability across value chains.
FDI reinforces the platform through Data Space building blocks, including connectors, federated services, identity and trust mechanisms, and usage-control policy enforcement, enabling ecosystem participants to share data selectively while retaining sovereignty.

The Results

UniMaaS establishes a unified and intelligent foundation for Manufacturing as a Service in Europe.
