The Story

As 5G introduced service-based architectures, disaggregated RAN, and network slicing, it became clear that future 6G systems must go further. Emerging applications demand end-to-end programmability, intelligent connectivity across multiple domains, and seamless integration of distributed cloud resources. However, today’s network infrastructures remain fragmented, with limited flexibility to dynamically compose services across hybrid and multi-stakeholder environments.

The 6G-Cloud project addresses this challenge by reimagining network architecture as AI-native and cloud-continuum-centric. It enables flexible composition of network functions across different 6G segments, supporting intelligent, scalable, and sustainable connectivity in increasingly pervasive cloud environments.

Project Overview

6G-Cloud designs and validates a holistic AI-native, service-oriented 6G architecture built on top of the cloud continuum. The project integrates cloud resources from multiple stakeholders and enables dynamic composition of network functions across hybrid environments.

It develops AI-driven management frameworks, programmable business interfaces, and native AI/ML support embedded directly into the 6G system architecture. By incorporating scalability, resilience, sustainability, and security by design, 6G-Cloud advances the “network-of-networks” vision and validates its approach through targeted proofs-of-concept aligned with future standardization and open-source initiatives.

Our Contribution

FDI contributes to 6G-Cloud by designing and implementing the cloud-continuum and management frameworks that enable intelligent orchestration across hybrid, multi-stakeholder environments. Our role focuses on enabling programmable, AI-native network management while ensuring performance, scalability, and energy efficiency.

Specifically, FDI contributes through:

Design of resource partitioning mechanisms and multi-cloud service orchestration models that enable flexible composition of network functions across distributed 6G segments.
Development of programmable control interfaces that expose network capabilities to higher-level automation and AI-driven components, ensuring scalability and performance compliance.
Definition of how AI/ML models are trained, deployed, and governed across multiple architectural planes to support seamless AI-native operation.
Integration of digital-twin validation mechanisms to continuously assess and optimize network behavior through data-driven feedback loops.
Contribution to realistic validation scenarios and alignment with emerging 6G standardization and open-source initiatives.

The Results

Through its architectural innovations and validation activities, 6G-Cloud advances the transition toward AI-native, programmable 6G systems across the cloud continuum.

AI-native 6G architecture validated through targeted proofs-of-concept
Multi-cloud, multi-stakeholder integration demonstrated
Closed-loop AI orchestration enabled via digital-twin validation
Contributions to 6G standardization and open-source initiatives
